Funkeln - trotz allem 2006, 70 x 70 cm

SCIN­TIL­LAT­ING - NEV­ER­THE­LESSThis quilt was made for the ex­hi­bi­tion "Ogget­ti Preziosi" (Valu­able ob­jects) shown at the Quilt Art Fes­ti­val 07 in Lugano. Nine Swiss fi­bre artists were in­vit­ed to make a piece suit­ing this ti­tle. A hand­full of "gem­stones" had to be worked in­to the quilt. My first as­so­ci­a­tion with gem­stones is the scin­til­la­tion ob­tained through the facets of the cut­ting. I tried to re­pro­duce this ef­fect by em­pha­siz­ing and over­lap­ping the geo­met­ri­cal shapes and by us­ing bright col­ors. But the first as­so­ci­a­tion is fol­lowed by more crit­i­cal thoughts about wealth and pover­ty, ex­ploita­tion, the ori­gin and the min­ing of gem­stones, hence the dark­er col­ors in the back­ground. In the end, how­ev­er, what re­mains - nev­er­the­less - is the scin­til­la­tion, the won­der of the gem­stones.
